Description
I studied Semitic languages (Hebrew and Arabic) and the history of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. My Ph.D-thesis was on Abraham Ibn Daud\'s Ha-Emunah ha-Ramah (1986). I taught various subjects (Hebrew language, Rabbinics, medieval Jewish philosophy and exegesis, modern Hebrew literature) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1994-2001) and at the University of Amsterdam (2001-2019, retirement July 2019). My main research interest is medieval Jewish philosophy and science, in particular Arabic-Hebrew translations and terminology. I published an edition with English translation of Samuel Ibn Tibbon\'s Hebrew translation of Aristotle\'s Meteorology, Otot ha-Shamayim (Brill, 1995). An edition, translation and study of the part on natural philosophy of the thirteenth-century Hebrew encyclopedic text Midrash ha-Ḥokhmah is forthcoming (Brill, 2023). Together with Dr Reimund Leicht I edit the journal Aleph. Historical Studies in Science & Judaism. I am associated with the project \"PESHAT in Context\" (University of Hamburg/Hebrew University Jerusalem).
