Main research activities
The Centre for Jewish Research was established on July 1, 2005 at the Institute of History of the University of Łódź. The task of the Centre is to conduct research on the history of Jews in central Poland. The Centre performs several research and publication projects conducted in collaboration with institutions in Poland and abroad. One of the main tasks of the Centre, apart from its own research work, is to make information about the existing sources and their content available through source publications and information studies.
The research activity of the Centre focuses primarily on the history of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is mostly dictated by the specificity of the Łódź region. The Centre's academic staff carry out research projects related primarily to the history of the Łódź Ghetto (The Lexicon of the Łódź Ghetto, The Chronicle of the Łódź Ghetto) and Jewish literature (Jewish Literary Life in Łódź 1905-1945) as well as history of the Jewish Community in Łódź (Legal Regulations for Jews in Polish Kingdom in 19th Century). A number of diaries and other historical sources from the Łódź Ghetto have been published in the Centre. The materials collected and processed by the Centre are the documentation on Jewish associations, regulations concerning the Jewish population, issues for researching the social and professional structure, political and economic life. Scholars from the Centre are active members of Polish and international research associations.
