Main research activities
The Hebrew Epigraphy and Codicology Laboratory (LECE) operates in the field of Hebrew epigraphic and book manuscript heritage.
The research fields consist of the study of the manuscript (codicology) and its various writings (paleography), the census and cataloging, at national and European level, of the fragments of medieval Hebrew manuscripts reused as bindings are underway.
The laboratory is also implementing a website in which it inserts the 16,000 bifolios, sheets and minor fragments, discovered so far in Italy. Two other fields of research of the LECE are the study and publication of the epitaphs of the funerary stelae of the Italian Jewish cemeteries in the “Corpus Epitaphiorum Hebaicorum Italiae”, and the study of the registers compiled by the Italian Jewish communities in the secc. XVI XIX.
The LECE carries out consultancy for the identification, dating and restoration of:
Hebrew manuscripts
Printed texts in Hebrew
Jewish documents, acts of various kinds, in all spellings, square, semicursive and cursive
Examination and deciphering of Jewish funerary epigraphs.
In addition, in the department courses are regularly taught in Biblical Hebrew; Ivrit; History of Judaism; History of the Hebrew book; Jewish Culture in The Modern Period (in English).
