Main research activities
The main tasks of the institute include research, publication of its own and third-party scientific studies, and the promotion of young scientists. The scientists of this non-university research institute teach at the University of Hamburg. The institute organizes conferences, colloquia and guest lectures in close cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions.
The most important research assignment of the institute is the evaluation of the rich archival records on the history of the Jews in the Hamburg area from the beginnings to the present. This also includes research into the Spanish and Portuguese Jews who have settled here as well as the development of the Jewish cemeteries in this region. In addition, the institute is generally dedicated to the history, culture and religion of German-speaking Judaism from the early modern period to the present day.
The main focuses of research are:
History of the Jews in Hamburg, Altona and Wandsbek
Documentation of Jewish cemeteries in the Hamburg area
History and culture of the Sephardic Jews in Germany
Religious and cultural history
Jewish social history
Migration history
Jewish women's and gender history
The library, the heart of the institute, with more than 70,000 volumes, is one of the most important historical special libraries in the whole of northern Germany. With its core collection area, it is also one of the large special collections on the history and culture of Judaism in German-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. In addition to the extensive collection of Judaica, the scientific reference and research library has an important collection of Hebraica and around 600 national and international periodicals. The holdings include old prints, Hebrew works from the 16th century and valuable, rare originals in German.
