Main research activities
The Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and the Middle East (ILC) succeeded in 2007 the former Institute of Philology of the CSIC. The ILC's main objective is the study of the languages and cultures of the Mediterranean basin and its adjacent areas, based on the original texts and from a multidisciplinary perspective.
The fundamental lines of research developed at the ILC cover the languages and cultures of the ancient Near East, the classical languages and the culture of ancient Greece and Rome, together with their continuation in the Byzantine and Neo-Greek world, as well as in the Latin Middle Ages. and the Neo-Latin world, the biblical culture and the Hebrew language, the Judeo-Spanish world and its Sephardic survival, the Arabic language and Islam, as well as the study of the processes of cultural production and transmission.
The ILC is configured as a singular institute within the CSIC and is also an exceptional center in the Spanish scientific field, due to the multilingual and multicultural nature of its object of study. In addition to the different research projects developed at the ILC and the scientific production with the multiple activities that they generate, the impact of its periodical publications (Al-Qantara , Emerita and Sefarad) and of the different collections of monographs that direct its researchers. It is home to a research group dealing with the comparative study of sacred texts in Judaism and Islam from a multidisciplinary perspective.
