How do we understand Jewish heritage before we attempt to represent it?
This is the question at the heart of our upcoming online seminar, “Jewish Perspectives. Reflecting Identities,” scheduled for September 16th from 10:00 to 13:00 CET.
Over the course of a single morning, we will explore the theoretical and ethical dimensions that shape how museums engage with Jewish history—including the Holocaust period and its lasting impact on Jewish life.
What to expect:
-
Dr. David Mendelsohn will reflect on tangible and intangible Jewish heritage beyond the nation-state, tracing transnational networks and the rich diversity of Jewish experiences—Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Romaniote, Mizrahi, and more.
-
Dr. Xenia Eleftheriou will address the ethics of representation, tackling difficult questions curators face: How do you represent destroyed communities without reducing them to absence? How do you acknowledge violence without sensationalism?
Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A, with time reserved for discussion.
The seminar is open to all—you do not need to be affiliated with an AEJM member institution to take part.
