New publication: Alleyways — now available for the first time in English

First published in Tel Aviv in 1929, Elisheva Bikhovski’s Alleyways was the first full-length Hebrew novel written by a woman in Eretz Israel. Set in bohemian Moscow in 1922–1923, it follows Jewish and non-Jewish writers and artists navigating literary ambition, love, poverty, and relationships across cultural and religious boundaries.

Translated by Peter C. Appelbaum and edited by Benton Arnovitz, this annotated edition makes the novel accessible to English-speaking readers and offers new opportunities for teaching and studying Hebrew modernism and women’s literary history.
