Between 1919 and 1939, Paris was one of the major centres of Yiddish theatre outside Eastern Europe. Drawing on an exceptional corpus gathered through extensive research in Paris, New York, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and documenting nearly 1,000 plays and some 4,000 performances staged in more than fifty venues, this book reconstructs the history of a theatrical world remarkable for its intensity and diversity. It explores how Jewishness was shaped, negotiated, and transformed on the Yiddish stage, within a predominantly Yiddish-speaking community and through encounters with French audiences and the broader Parisian cultural context.
The first book-length study devoted entirely to Yiddish theatre in interwar Paris, the book grew out of a doctoral thesis, which was awarded the 2025 Henri Hertz Prize by the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris.
