Call for Papers: “Counting Families, Controlling Lives: Jewish Demography, Family and State Policy in Central Europe” deadline for submissions: 15th November 2026
CFP: “Counting Families, Controlling Lives: Jewish Demography, Family and State Policy in Central Europe”is organized by the Association for Central European Jewish History and Genealogy (CEJHG), in partnership with the CEU Center for Jewish Studies and the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, and will take place on 4-6 May 2027 at CEU’s Budapest campus.
We are now inviting paper proposals from historians, genealogists, archivists, and researchers of any relevant field, working on Jewish history and genealogy in Central Europe. The Call For Papers covers a broad range of topics, from the 300th anniversary of the Familiantengesetze across the Habsburg monarchy (which occurred earlier this week), Jewish demography and state policy, migration and persecution, and cross-border family networks in Greater Hungary, Holocaust history through genealogy, Judaica provenance, digital databases and AI, genealogy and behavioral studies, to genealogy as a tool for education.
The first day of our conference will coincide with Yom Hashoah, the Israeli Holocaust memorial day, and therefore we will dedicate the day to papers that connect holocaust studies or holocaust history with Jewish genealogy and family networks.
The conference language is English.
We will be accepting submissions until 15 November 2026.
We would be delighted if you would consider submitting a paper, and would also greatly appreciate it if you could share the CFP with colleagues, researchers, and students who may be interested.

We hope to see familiar names among the submissions, alongside new voices and perspectives that can contribute varied points of view to our understanding of Central European Jewish history and help shape how it is researched, remembered, and passed on to future generations.
