Call for Papers: ‘Intersecting Methodologies: Micro and Macro Approaches in Holocaust and Nazi Persecution Studies’

Friday 19 June 2026, Senate House, London
Deadline for submissions: 15 February 2026

Lewis Champion and Bill Edmonds are co-organising a PGR/ECR workshop on ‘Intersecting Methodologies: Micro and Macro Approaches in Holocaust and Nazi Persecution Studies’ which will take place at Senate House (London) on Friday 19 June 2026.

Their call for papers is currently accepting applications:

We invite submissions from PGRs and ECRs for an academic workshop dedicated to exploring the methodologies used in micro-history and macro-history within Holocaust and Nazi persecution studies. By bringing together scholars who examine individual victims and those who focus on broader groups, this workshop aims to foster discussions on the methods, challenges, and potential innovations in both approaches.

Objective:

The workshop will provide a space for scholars to share insights into their methodological approaches, discussing how micro-historical methods (focused on individuals or small groups) and macro-historical methods (focused on large-scale patterns or broader groups) can complement and inform one another. The goal is to enhance interdisciplinary exchange and encourage new ways of thinking about the study of Nazi persecution.

Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Methodological challenges and opportunities in micro-history and macro-history
• Archival sources and testimonies for individual- and group-level analysis
• Temporal and spatial scales in studying persecution, from the individual to the global
• Narrating the Holocaust: balancing personal histories and collective memory
• Integrating qualitative and quantitative evidence in historical analysis
• Ethical considerations in micro and macro approaches

Submission Guidelines:
• Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and should clearly outline the proposed paper’s objectives, methodology, and relevance to the workshop themes.
• Please include a brief biographical statement (100 words) detailing your affiliation and research interests.
• Submissions should be sent to Lewis.Champion.2021@live.rhul.ac.uk and Bill.Edmonds.2022@live.rhul.ac.uk by 15th February 2026.

Important Dates:
• Abstract Submission Deadline: 15th February 2026
• Notification of Acceptance: 10th March 2026

Workshop Format:
Accepted participants will briefly present their papers in panel sessions, followed by moderated discussions aimed at fostering collaborative insights and a micro–macro methodological dialogue.
