Wingate Scholarships are grants for individuals from The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation (see separate funder entry). The principal objective of the Foundation is the general advancement of such Jewish and other charitable purposes, as the Trustees, in their absolute discretion, think fit. Specifically, the objectives are to support the arts and education projects and to establish and endow scholarships, fellowships, professional chairs, prizes and awards. The Foundation`s activities fall into two parts: grants awarded by the Trustees to bodies with appropriate charitable objectives and scholarships awarded to individuals selected by an interview panel (see separate funder entry for Wingate Scholarships).
Type of funding available: Independent Research Projects in most subjects (this includes writing projects in biography, fiction and non-fiction, poetry, translation etc); Doctoral and Post-Doctoral studies; Field Work associated with Independent Research, Doctoral or Post-Doctoral Projects; Craft & Design Research Projects. 7 Scholarships in the field of Jewish Studies have been awarded since 1988, with further scholarships made for philosophy, theology, sociology and social anthropology.
Beneficiary type:
Eligibility criteria: Scholarships are awarded to individuals over the age of 24 who are considered to be of great potential or proven excellence and who can prove financial need in order to undertake pioneering or original work of demonstrable value. Work in most subjects will be considered. Applicants must be citizens of the UK, the Commonwealth, Israel or Ireland, or citizens of the European Union (provided that they have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years). There is no upper age limit and the Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Wingate Scholarships attempts to provide funding for cross-disciplinary projects that might not fall comfortably into any of the conventional funding categories. Exclusions / restrictions: Previous recipients of Wingate Scholarships are not able to apply for scholarships a second time. Funding is not normally offered for: medical research; performing arts (except music); taught courses; Courses or Diplomas leading to Professional Qualifications or Electives; Courses or Diplomas at Drama, Art or Business Colleges – Fine Art or Photography;
