Funding objective / Areas of interest: The Foundation for Polish Science has been in operation since 1991. It is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit institution which pursues the mission of supporting science. It is the largest source of science funding in Poland outside of the state budget. The Foundation supports scholars and research teams in all fields of inquiry.
Type of funding available: The Foundation offers a wide range of support for researchers. The programs of funding scholars can be divided in three groups: awards, fellowships and financing of publications.

Eligibility criteria: The Foundation supports both Polish and foreign scholars, but criteria of eligibility vary between grant programs. Foreign applicants are normally expected to work or collaborate with Polish academic institutions.
Exclusions / restrictions: • Realization of statutory tasks or supplementing the budget of research institutions
• Financing of study at the university, doctoral or post-doctoral level
• Organizing seminars, conferences, summer schools, or student scientific excursions
• Financing of participation in courses and training excursions
• Publication of research results, conference materials or financing of journals (except for publication in the Open Access system, for which financing is available in some programmes)
• Augmenting the resources of libraries and museums
• Purchasing of standard teaching equipment.

The book published by the FNP looks at diaries of children witnesses of the Holocaust in an attempt to understand their perceptions of the wartime era.
Application guidelines: Applications for research stipends and programs of research skills training have various deadlines, usually in-between September and December. A regularly updated list of fellowships with deadlines is available at:

“Ideas for Poland” grant applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The Polish-American Scientific Award application deadline is in December each year. Applications for monograph publications are accepted on on-going basis.
Most applications need to be filled in online, while hard copies of the application forms and supporting documents must also to be sent to the FNP. The details of the application procedure in each case are specified at the Foundation website.
