Funding objective / Areas of interest: The Trust`s objects are: (a) to advance the Christian religion (and in doing so the council may have regard to the teachings of Joanna Southcott and her successors); (b) in furtherance of Christian principles to relieve both poverty and sickness and to advance education, both generally and in the production, publication and dissemination of religious works. The basis and order of preference of the aims of the charity are as follows:
1. Work related to the advancement of the religious beliefs of the Society as defined by its original charitable objects; 2. Sponsoring the writing, publication, and distribution of religious works associated with the Visitation; 3. Undertaking the duties and responsibilities incumbent on being the custodian of Joanna Southcott’s Box of Sealed Writings; 4. Sponsoring research by recognised academic institutions into the history and theology of the Society and its antecedents; 5. Supporting the work of the Church of England in advancing the Christian Religion especially in the Bedford area, or in aspects of theology or liturgy that relate to the Society’s specific interests; 6. Supporting recognised local organisations dealing with the relief of sickness within the Bedford area. See the Society`s website for further information regarding their beliefs and activities.
Type of funding available: Scholarships for doctoral work in Theology. These scholarships will be awarded for 1 year of funding and will assist with the cost of University fees and expenses. The Society introduced a programme of funding for scholars studying qualifying theology topics at doctoral level. The scheme has funded 68 scholars to date. In 2007/8, the Society offered a number of scholarships to doctoral students studying at British universities and made its priority the encouragement of those who were about to embark on research and who wished to consider the study of prophecy in all its manifestations. The Society hopes to stimulate interest in the life and history of apocalyptic and sectarian groups of all kinds. The Society has a special interest in the way in which such groups developed interest in healing, personal spiritual development, and the practices that accompanied them. In addition, it will continue to consider applications from those working more generally in the following areas: Prophecy, The Book of Revelation, The Second Coming, Jewish apocalyptic literature and Christian theology, Millennialism and Christian millenarian movements.
Beneficiary type:

Application guidelines: A formal application in writing should be made to the Society`s Administrator. The application should set out the purpose for which the funding is required, and explain how it falls within the funding criteria and complies with the requirements stated on the Society`s website. Full information on the work of the applicant body together with details of how the proposed funding will be applied should be given. The Administrator will acknowledge receipt of an application, and indicate if the application falls within the parameters set out on the Society`s website. At this point the Society may call for additional information, or indicate that it is unable to consider the application further. Most applications fail because they fall outside the criteria set out on their website, however the Society does not provide additional reasons why it is unable to support a particular application. Insofar as an application meets the parameters set out on the Society`s website, when all relevant information has been received the application will be discussed at the next meeting of the Society`s trustees together with other valid applications. The trustees may at that meeting refuse or defer any application or request further information without giving reasons. Applicants will be advised in writing of the trustees` decision. The trustees meet two or three times per year, although not at set dates.
Trustees: Leslie Aston; Revd Dr Jane Shaw; John Lamont Coghill; Gordon Allan;
Additional information: The charity is a Christian society. It was originally set up as a religious community, which thrived in Bedford between the First and Second World Wars. Over the years members of the Society have donated money and property to the charity to further the life of the community and its religious aims. A small donation flow continues to be received, however the charity’s income today is derived primarily from its property and other investments.
