Funding objective / Areas of interest: Shalem Center`s Institute for Philosophy, Politics and Religion offers Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellowships for young scholars who wish to study the great works of the Western tradition side by side with classical Jewish sources. The application forms and examples of previous Fellowships granted indicate that all fields related to Jewish Studies may be considered. Shalem`s graduate and postdoctoral fellows aspire to academic postings in Israel and around the world. Fellowships are granted for one year to postdoctoral and graduate students who wish to pursue studies at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem. Fellows may also choose to enroll in undergraduate courses, which are conducted in Hebrew.

Eligibility criteria: Fellows are expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of the Shalem Center, attend a certain number of graduate courses per semester, write a significant independent research paper and attend occasional lectures. They must also present their own work once each semester.
Exclusions / restrictions:
Example grants: Previous Postdoctoral Fellowships awarded include: scholar from Italy with a PhD from University of Bologna, at Shalem he will study Christian Hebraists such as Erudites, Francois Vatable, Jean Mercier; scholar from Czech Republic with a PhD from Charles University in Prague, at Shalem he will study options for Israeli diplomacy to influence EU Middle East policies through cooperation with the Union’s newer members; scholar from Italy with degrees from University of Florence and a PhD from University of Cambridge, at Shalem she will pursue her research into the exchange and reciprocal impact of ideas between Jews and non-Jews, in particular focusing on Jewish philanthropy in Italy within the context of post-emancipation Western Europe. Graduate Fellowships awarded 2007/08 include: student from Israel studying at Hebrew University, at Shalem he will look at the challenge Biblical texts pose for post-modernism and relativism; student from USA currently studying at Brandeis University, at Shalem she will continue her interests in Zionist thought and history focusing on the concept of bi-nationalism.

Application guidelines: Postdoctoral Fellowship applicants must submit various materials alongside an application form, including a CV, a CD copy of their PHD dissertation, a preliminary research proposal and references. Graduate Fellowship applicants must also submit certain materials, such as CV, writing samples and references. Application forms and full admission procedures are available on the Shalem Center website. Applications may be submitted by mail or email.
