The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Heinrich Heine University (HHU) Düsseldorf is seeking to fill two Professorships (W2/W3) for Jewish Studies to take up position by 01 April 2025.

We are looking for
- an outstanding scholar in Jewish Studies specializing in literature or cultural studies. Their research should focus on exile research, migration research and/or research on cultures of remembrance. A willingness to develop a profile in the field of Israel studies and/or contemporary European Jewish cultures is also desirable.

Together with the Professorship of Yiddish Studies, the two professorships advertised should contribute to the development of a profile, particularly in the field of Modern Jewish Cultures. An in-depth understanding of Jewish modernity rooted in knowledge of the religious and cultural traditions of Judaism is stipulated. We are looking for scholars with profiles that are compatible with the
faculty‘s key areas, who are enthusiastic about working closely with colleagues, and are open to a new departmental structure at the Institute of Jewish Studies. Excellent Hebrew and English language skills are required; the successful applicant is able to teach in German.
The candidate should enhance the university‘s cooperation with the cultural institutions of the city of Düsseldorf, for example within the framework of the Citizens‘ University. Cooperation with the Martin Buber Institute in Cologne is also envisaged. A willingness to closely cooperate within the Institute for Jewish Studies as well as with the other subjects within the faculty, in particular Transcultural Studies, History, and German Studies, is expected. A high level of commitment to university self-governance is also desirable.
In addition to the general employment requirements in accordance with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz NRW), the recruitment requirements include, in particular, pedagogical aptitude, special aptitude for academic work, and additional academic achievements. Women with equal aptitude, qualifications, and academic performance will be given preferential consideration, unless reasons unrelated to another qualified applicant prevail.

In addition to a relevant dissertation, further publications in peer-reviewed organs, as well as the successful acquisition of third-party funds are required for an appointment to grade W 2.
In addition to the above-mentioned appointment requirements and the above-mentioned additional requirements for the professorship at grade W 2, an appointment at grade W 3 also requires proven significant success in the independent acquisition of national or international third-party funding (including special funds from outside the university) of at least EUR 100,000 per annum on average over the last five years as well as extensive publication activity (including at least five peer-reviewed articles) with international visibility.
