Tenure-Track Professor position in Jewish Education and Pedagogy (m/f/d)  (W1)

to be filled as soon as possible at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg (HfJS).

Candidates should have an international reputation of interdisciplinary scholarship in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Jewish Studies.
  2. Jewish Education.
  3. Educational Sciences.
  4. Intercultural Pedagogy.

A strong interest in any of the following will be an advantage:

  1. Formal and informal Jewish education and learning.
  2. Didactics of Jewish education and learning.
  3. Models of intercultural learning.
  4. Professionalization of Jewish education.
  5. Jewish identity development.

The appointee will join the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg and will be expected to direct the Master of Education program in Jewish Religious Education, develop and teach courses at both B. A. and M. A. levels, publish high-quality research, apply for third-party funding, engage in administrative duties, provide leadership and mentorship roles, as well as participate in academic and professional activities.

Regarding the Master of Education program in Jewish Religious Education, the appointee will be expected to work closely with the University of Heidelberg’s School of Education. The appointee is furthermore expected to be willing to actively collaborate with Jewish communities, schools, and educational organizations in Germany.

In accordance to Section 51 of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg), candidates are expected to have an outstanding dissertation in a relevant discipline (e.g. Jewish Studies, Educational Studies or (Intercultural) Religious Pedagogy with a focus on Judaism), internationally recognized publications, teaching experience and experience in academic administration. The Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg is fully committed to the pursuit of excellence in both teaching and research. Accordingly, candidates are required to provide evidence of quality teaching and information on their research records. Language skills in English and Hebrew are required. The languages of instruction are German and English. The candidates are expected to acquire German language in a suitable level within the first year.

The position is initially limited to four years. If the evaluation process is successful, it will be extended for another two years. After a successful tenure evaluation, the position will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. For applicants who have held academic positions before or after their doctorate, the duration of pre- and post-doctoral employment together should not exceed six years.
