Conference: “Parallel Paths, Shared Past: Jewish History and Genealogy in Central Europe”

4-6 May 2026

The conference “Parallel Paths, Shared Past: Jewish History and Genealogy in Central Europe”, organized by the newly founded Association for Central European Jewish History and Genealogy (CEJHG) in partnership with the Jewish Studies program at the Central European University (CEU), will take place at the Vienna campus of the CEU on 4-6 May 2026, over three full days (9:00-19:00).

This conference brings together leading scholars and genealogists, to explore Jewish history through the combined perspectives of academic research and genealogical methodology. The program highlights how archival records, family histories, and newly developed databases can illuminate individual lives, reconstruct communities, and deepen our understanding of Jewish society across Central Europe.

Through keynote lectures, panels dedicated to different aspects of research, specific case studies, and methodological presentations, the conference showcases innovative research, newly accessible sources, and the growing role of genealogy in advancing historical scholarship and preserving Jewish cultural heritage across different regions in the former Habsburg Empire and its successor states. It offers a unique opportunity for researchers, genealogists, and anyone interested in Jewish history to engage with current scholarship and connect with an international community dedicated to this field.
