Rethinking Jewish and Non-Jewish Relations: Transdisciplinary Conference for Early Career Researchers in Jewish Studies
Organizers: Susanne Korbel, Anna Lidor-Osprian, Lukas Nievoll, Thomas Stoppacher
Date: May 7–9, 2018 Place: Graz
Location: Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Graz
In the last decades, Jewish Studies have been subject to fundamental changes. The various subjects in Jewish Studies have drawn from developments in individual disciplines such as transnational history, comparative literature, social sciences, etc., but also from transdisciplinary developments such as the various “turns,” specifically linguistic and cultural turns. Entangled histories and interpretations, the perception and conception of spaces and the construction of identity, to name just a few, have shaped the way we look at Jewish and non-Jewish relations today.
Not being limited to a specific period or discipline, this conference for early career researchers seeks to present and reflect on new approaches in the transdisciplinary field of Jewish Studies. The conference aims at bringing together advanced masters students, PhD candidates, early post-docs, as well as established scholars in productive discussions on their current research projects.
Potential participants are encouraged to send in a proposal for a (research) paper that engages with new approaches in Jewish Studies. The abstract should not exceed 300 words and be submitted alongside a brief biography (including professional affiliation, if there is any, and contact details) in a single PDF file to email@example.com by January 20, 2018.
In addition to introducing the overall conception of the project (or a selected chapter of it), the paper should explicitly discuss the methodological and theoretical approaches central to it. The conference paper has to be handed in one month before the conference. Two discussants will respond to each paper.
If funding is secured, we will cover travel costs and accommodation for participants who have no opportunity to receive funding from their institutions. Successful applicants will be notified by February 1, 2018.
