Call for Papers

Publication series of the DFG Priority Program 2357 “Jewish Cultural Heritage”—Vol. 2: Authorizing Jewish Heritage—Interdisciplinary Perspectives, submission of abstracts: February 23, 2025, submission of articles: June 16, 2025

Against the backdrop of global challenges concerning cultural identities, their preservation and appropriation, this planned anthology is dedicated to the discussion of multi-layered contexts of Jewish cultural heritage, focusing on interdisciplinary discourses regarding the authorization of Jewish heritage: Who authorizes practices and artifacts as cultural heritage and how do these attributions come about? The (subject-)specific discourses are based on cultural, political, religious, or social interests, reflecting speaker positions in interaction, negotiation, and legitimization processes. The contributions will shed light on how Jewish cultural heritage is interpreted and represented in different contexts and what challenges and opportunities this presents for Jewish communities, researchers, cultural policy, and state actors.

As part of the publication series “Jüdische Gegenwart. Beiträge zu jüdischen Lebenswelten in Deutschland und Europa [Jewish Presence. Contributions to Jewish Life in Germany and Europe],” affiliated with the DFG-funded Priority Programme 2357 ‘Jewish Cultural Heritage,’ we welcome submissions on the topic of authorizations of Jewish cultural heritage. With this call for papers, we — the priority program’s junior research group — invite all interested scholars who are researching Jewish cultural heritage in the broadest sense and are in their early doctoral and postdoctoral phases.

Considering interdisciplinary approaches, particularly Critical Heritage Studies, the anthology aims to offer a comprehensive examination of the dynamic processes that shape Jewish heritage. The publication will thus be dedicated to three main topics, which will focus on different levels of cultural heritage authorization:

  1. Heritage and state institutions as an authorizing force in the Authorized Heritage
    Discourse (AHD) ’Jewish cultural heritage’
  2. Academia as an authorizing force in the AHD ’Jewish cultural heritage’
  3. Cultural heritage authorization beyond the AHD ’Jewish cultural heritage’

Articles that deal with the processes of cultural heritage authorization in an innovative way—beyond the main topics mentioned—are also welcome. Articles can be written in either German or English and should not exceed a maximum length of 30,000 characters, including spaces and footnotes. Responsibility for technical language editing lies with the authors.

Please send your abstracts (Word or PDF file, maximum 250 words) indicating the number of any illustrations (color/black and white) by February 23, 2025, to the following e-mail addresses:
