Call for papers: “Histories of Violence in Central and Eastern Europe. A Comparative Perspective,” Deadline for papers 30th March 2025.
The conference, organized by the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw, the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw, the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the Commission on Slavonic and East European Studies of the Committee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the German Historical Institute Warsaw, will take place from September 15th to 17th, 2025, at the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw.
The event aims to explore the varied histories of violence in East Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. We are inviting scholars to submit proposals that examine different types of violence—physical, symbolic, psychological, and military—through various research frameworks such as gender, class, race, and ethnicity. Papers that pose bold theses and explore stories of individual and collective violence from social, legal, cultural, and military history perspectives are especially welcome.
Key themes include:
- Continuity and variability in different types of violence from the Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century
- The evolution of narratives about violence and their constant components
- The concurrence and interrelationship between different types of violence
- Theories of violence in historical practice
Our keynote speakers will be Diana Dumitru (Georgetown University), Stuart Carroll (University of York), and Piotr Maciej Majewski (University of Warsaw).
Submissions are accepted until March 30, 2025, via the following Google form. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 31, 2025. While the conference organizers provide meals, travel costs are the responsibility of the participants. The conference will be conducted in English.
