The Prague Summer School of Jewish Studies 2018
Early Modern Yiddish in Prague: Language and Literature
2–6 September 2018
The Prague Centre for Jewish Studies
Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague
The Prague Centre for Jewish Studies now invites applications for a summer school on Old Yiddish literature. The series of workshops will be conducted by Dr Claudia Rosenzweig (Bar-Ilan University) and is meant to serve as an introduction to Old Yiddish literature, in particular in relation to the cultural history of the Jews in Prague in the Early Modern Era.
A group of sessions will present a short history of the language and an overview of the research on the subject. The second part of the course will focus on reading Yiddish texts, such as Eyn sheyn mayse (Bodleian Library, Ms. Opp. 8° 796), ‘A Fine Story’ describing the foundation of the Jewish Community of Prague, and excerpts from other books connected with the history of the city. The language of instruction will be English.
Students of B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programmes who have a reading knowledge of Hebrew and/or know German language are invited to apply. Previous knowledge of Yiddish is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. An optional series of introductory sessions to Hebrew script for participants with no Hebrew skills will take place on 30 and 31 August 2018.
The organizers will arrange accommodation of non-Prague residents in university dormitories. A limited number of contributions towards travel cost will be available to participants without access to such support at their home institutions.
Applications should include a CV and a short cover letter describing the applicant’s language skills, previous academic experience, and the expected benefits of the seminar. Please indicate your interest in applying for a travel bursary and/or the introductory course on Hebrew script.
Applications should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org by 10 June 2018. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of June 2018.
