Notice of a General Meeting of the European Association for Jewish Studies
Tuesday 12th July 2022, 12:15 pm, in the Safra Lecture Theatre, King’s College, London
Dear Members,
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Executive Committee of the European Association for Jewish Studies took the decision to postpone our quadrennial Congress, originally scheduled for July 2022. The Congress will now take place in Frankfurt, Germany, on 16-20 July 2023. Our ‘Rules and Byelaws’ and our ‘Articles of Association’ require us to elect the Honorary Officers (President, Treasurer and Secretary) and other members of the Executive Committee at the General Meeting of the Congress. Furthermore, according to Article 10 of the ‘Articles of Association’, the Executive Committee is required to hold a General Meeting every 4 years and 6 months. We will not be able to fulfil this requirement if we wait until the Frankfurt Congress in July 2023. We are also required by the ‘Articles of Association’ to hold General Meetings of the Members in-person. We are therefore calling an in-person General Meeting of our Members to propose the following items:
1) To amend the ‘Articles of Association’ to include more detailed provisions on electronic communications and voting for Member meetings.
Specifically, to add to Article 10 a sub-section (3): ‘The directors of the EAJS may call a General Meeting at any time, to be held in-person or electronically. Voting for Member meetings may be conducted electronically’.
(NB For Member meetings, unless this is specified in the Articles (which it is not), this is not currently permitted).
2) To amend Article 10 of the ‘Articles of Association’ to allow for flexibility regarding the calling of a General Meeting every 4 years and 6 months.
Specifically, to amend Article 10 (2) as follows: ‘A General Meeting must take place at each Congress of the EAJS.’
3) To extend the tenure of the Honorary Officers and other Members of the Executive Committee to the time of the General Meeting to be held at the EAJS Frankfurt Congress in July 2023. This extension is requested to allow the Executive Committee to complete the planning and delivery of the Congress.
We are very grateful to Andrea Schatz, President of the British and Irish Association for Jewish Studies (BIAJS), for allowing us to hold our meeting under the auspices of the annual BIAJS conference (11-13 July 2022, King’s College, London). We know that a good number of you will be attending the BIAJS conference and we would be delighted to see you at the EAJS General Meeting. If you are not attending the BIAJS conference, but would like to attend the EAJS General Meeting in person, please sign up by email to Dr Simon Mayers (admin@eurojewishstudies.org) by 5 July 2022 so that we can arrange access for you to the venue at King’s College.
Those who are not attending can also vote in the General Meeting, using the proxy voting form (link). In this form you can record your vote on the resolutions outlined in the Notice of the General Meeting. All proxy voting forms must be submitted to Dr Simon Mayers (admin@eurojewishstudies.org) by 5 July 2022.
All Members of the European Association for Jewish Studies have the right to vote at the General Meeting scheduled for Tuesday 12th July 2022, 12:15 pm, in the Safra Lecture Theatre, King’s College, London. The Notice of this General Meeting has been posted on the EAJS website (this web page) and circulated as an EAJS Newsflash.
