Description
Born in New York City, Daniel Katz is a founding member of the Allgemeine Rabbinerkonferenz (General Rabbinical Association) in Germany. His doctoral dissertation was on a Latin treatise from ca. 1340 that describes the newly discovered system of notating musical rhythms. His subsequent research has been in the history of cantorial music, particularly in the 18th and early 19th centuries. He is particularly interested in Chazzan Shlomo, known as Kashtan, who was the the most famous cantor in Europe before Sulzer. Among Daniel\'s Jewish and rabbinical music compositions are a setting of Heinrich Heine’s \"Belsatzar\" for voice and string quartet, midrashim on the death of Moses for baritone and piano, and the story of the deaths of the sons of Buria and Rabbi Meir for an unaccompanied women’s trio. Rabbi Katz’s academic honors include two Fulbright grants and a research fellowship at Harvard University.
