Description
Jan Schwarz is associate professor of Yiddish studies at Lund University, Sweden, where Yiddish has been a state sponsored minority language since 2000. He began this position in 2011 after having taught Yiddish language and literature at University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Northwestern University, and University of Chicago. He is the author of Imagining Lives: Autobiographical Fiction of Yiddish Writers (2005) and recently of Survivors and exiles: Yiddish after the Holocaust (2015), as well as numerous critical articles about Jewish life-writing, Holocaust Literature, modern Yiddish culture, and Jewish American literature. He is also the translator of Scholem-Aleichem's Tevye the Dairyman into Danish (2009). Currently he is working on a monograph about I.B.Singer that is supported by a three year grant from the Swedish Research Council. He is also at work on a Danish translation of Abraham Sutzkever's prose work and war memoirs.
