Main research activities
The LEJ - Jewish Studies Laboratory was created at ISCSP - University of Lisbon in 2015 with the aim of complementing the framework of the research and development centers of this Institute, through a focus on analysis in the specific domain of the themes of the Sephardic heritage of the Portuguese-speaking countries, and to promote the research of Jewish communities of Portuguese cultural and historical matrix in contemporary times.
The research that LEJ intends to develop is part of current trends in history and genealogy, anthropology and international relations, placing today's globalized world at the center of its concerns. The diversity of forms of mobility that today weave together the complex relationships between people, cultures and places, rather than weakening, have strengthened past cultural heritages and establish new transnational interrelations over them, namely based on identities and material and immaterial cultural heritage, such as buildings and museums, in the first case, and religion or rituals and memory, in the second.
