The Institut romand des sciences bibliques (IRSB) is a non-denominational and multidisciplinary institute dedicated to the study of Jewish and Christian literature in the context of ancient cultures. The Institute is currently headed by Simon Butticaz .
His main areas of research cover the Hebrew Bible and the history of Israel in its Near Eastern context (prof. Ruth Ebach) ; Jewish pseudepigraphs and the history of Judaism in Antiquity (prof. David Hamidović ); The New Testament and ancient Christian traditions (prof. Simon Butticaz ); the history of ancient Christianity and the apocryphal Christian writings (prof. Frédéric Amsler).
The research carried out within the IRSB combines two approaches in particular: on the one hand, a rigorous philological study, which acknowledges the complexity of these literatures and the diversity of the forms in which they circulated; on the other hand, a reflection on the relationship between these writings and the groups who transmitted them, a reflection which mobilizes tools developed in the field of social and cultural history and anthropology and which seeks to understand the origin and the function of these literatures beyond the inherited historiographical paradigms.
In addition to numerous works in the field of biblical, apocryphal and pseudepigraphic literatures which have contributed to its international reputation, the Institute has also developed for more than twenty years a very complete and internationally recognized bibliographic database (" BiBIL "), which lists the main publications in the field of biblical and apocryphal studies (responsible: Anne-Sophie Gloor).
