Main research activities
Generally speaking, the subject of Jewish Studies aims to convey and research the more than 3000-year history of the religion and culture of Judaism. The content of Jewish Studies at the Institute for the Near and Middle East follows two main thematic axes. This is on the one hand the formative phase of Judaism in the rabbinical late antiquity in Palestine and Mesopotamia (as the places of origin of the two Talmuds) and on the other hand Judaism in the Islamic world.
As rabbinic Judaism is called after the rabbis, teachers and narrators obtained in the two Talmuds, Midrash and Targums Jewish tradition, called era of Jewish history. The course is intended to introduce the various aspects of rabbinic Judaism:
- Judaism and Hellenism
- Mysticism and liturgy
- Interpretation traditions
- the different types of rabbinical literature and their characteristics
It may not come as a surprise to Judaism that it deals with the formative phase of Judaism in late antiquity, but the second focus may be surprising. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that Judaism in the Islamic world, with its strong roots in the Middle East, must also be an equal focus at the institute. In this context, the various Judaistic issues can be dealt with in a constant exchange with related cultural studies disciplines represented at the institute on a philological basis in an innovative and leading manner.
This second thematic focus deals with the scientific development of the history and culture of the Jewish communities under Islamic rule from the 7th century with a focus on the Arab world. It also offers a view of Judaism in the Ottoman and Persian empires.
The teaching focuses on:
- religious authorities (the geonim)
- the Karaites
- Genizah studies
- the Jewish interpretation of the Bible
- Hebrew manuscript studies (in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library).
An international research group on the history of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim handling of the Arabic Bible , a project on Rabbanite and Karaite calendars and interreligious scholar networks in Ibn Abi Usaybiʿa's "History of Doctors" is linked to Judaic Studies.
