Members of the Leo Baeck Institute conduct and support research into the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry from the 17th century to the present day. The Institute aims to facilitate academic exchange among all of those engaged in understanding the history and culture of German-speaking Jews in Europe and throughout its diaspora. The LBI London also encourages the study of the German and European Jewish experience from the 17th to the 21st centuries to help understand contemporary socio-political debates concerning immigration, minorities, integration, and civil rights. The LBI London remains an independent institute and is a registered charity under English law.
The LBI London is also responsible for the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book which has appeared without a break for the last 50 years. Its articles cover cultural, economic, political, social and religious history as well as the impact of antisemitism and the Jewish responses to it. The Year Book's classified bibliography is regarded as being of unique value for researchers and students.
In addition to the Year Book, symposium volumes and monographs, the Institute is instrumental in publishing the Schriftenreihe wissenschaftlicher Abhandlungen, which comprises today 70 volumes.
Other functions of the London LBI include the organisation of a broad range of events such as lecture programmes and organising international conferences both in the UK and abroad as well as funding fellowships. The Institute has recently been successful in establishing two research professorships to investigate the role of German-speaking Jews in 19th and 20th century academia.
In addition to its publishing and conference activities, the London Leo Baeck Institute fulfils other functions related to its role as an educational charity. Our staff give information to the general public, advise scholars and students engaged in research on German-Jewish history, collect archival material for the New York Leo Baeck Institute, act as referees to organisations funding scholarships, and vet manuscripts submitted to publishers in England, Germany and the United States, and act as examiners for D.Phil and MA candidates in UK universities.
