The Centre, unique in Italy, gathers scholars engaged in the study of various aspects of the culture and history of Judaism, from antiquity to today.
From a philological and linguistic point of view, initiatives and studies aimed at deepening ancient and modern Hebrew will be promoted. Particular attention will be given, on the side of medieval, modern and contemporary history, to the promotion of research aimed at understanding the history and Jewish presence in Italy, anti-Semitism and the process of integration of the Jewish minority into the Italian social fabric. As evidence of the University's growing interest in research on contemporary Judaism, a collaboration agreement was recently signed with the Yad Vashem-Institute for Holocaust Research in Jerusalem. The purpose of the agreement is to encourage comparison and cultural exchange between scholars of different backgrounds and backgrounds, in order to enrich the framework of research and scientific activities related to the themes of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. Similar experiences of collaboration in the international field may be extended, on the initiative of the Center, to other scientific bodies and institutions operating abroad. A collaboration that could take advantage of the documentary richness offered by the archival and book collections of our country.
Interdisciplinary researches, having as their object the enhancement of the artistic and book heritage of medieval and modern Judaism are being developed. These include the transcription and restoration of the tombstones of the Jewish cemetery of Pisa and the census of books and documents of Jewish interest preserved in the libraries of the University of Pisa.
