Award for Outstanding New Research on Judaism and the History of Science

In Memory of Harry Austryn Wolfson (1887-1974)

The Association for the Promotion of the Study of the History of Philosophy and Science in Judaism (Verein zur Förderung der Erforschung der Geschichte der Philosophie und Wissenschaften im Judentum e.V. – Berlin/Germany) invites submissions for a competition recognizing outstanding new research on the in- terface between Judaism and the sciences throughout history. This competition will honor two young scholars for their innovative articles (up to sixty pages) exploring topics connected to this field of research. A total sum of 1500 euro will be awarded to the recipients, and their winning articles will be submitted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Aleph – Historical Studies in Science & Judaism in 2024.

This award is dedicated to the memory of Harry Austryn Wolfson (1887-1974), whose extensive contributions include the groundbreaking book Crescas’ Cri- tique of Aristotle: Problems of Aristotle’s Physics in Jewish and Arabic philosophy (1929). Wolfson’s work remains an unsurpassed classic in the study of the inter- action between Jewish intellectual history and the history of science. 

The competition is open to young scholars who have completed their MA studies and/or received their PhD no more than five years ago. Please note that arti- cles accepted for publication in other journals are not eligible for consideration. Submitted articles must adhere to the editorial guidelines of Aleph (see https:// iupress.org/journals/aleph/). The deadline for submission is March 1, 2024.
